On June 8th, a cushion shaped cut ruby weighing 55.22ct, “Estrela de FURA,” will appear at Sotheby’s New York Rose Jewelry Auction. This is the largest gem grade ruby auction to date in the public auction market, with an estimated value of over $30 million, and is expected to set a new record for ruby auctions.
The original weight of the “Estrela de Fura” ruby before cutting reached 101ct. It was discovered by Dubai gemstone miner Fura Gems in July 2022 at the Montepeuz mine in Mozambique, with excellent clarity and reaching the “pigeon blood red” color level. After cutting and polishing, the final weight was 55.22ct. Fura Gems named it “Estrela de Fura”, meaning “Fura Star” in Portuguese.
The appraisal report issued by the Swiss Gemological Institute (SSEF) states that this gem exhibits a bright red hue due to multiple internal reflections; The identification report from GRS laboratory states that “this ruby has the characteristics typically found only in rubies from the Mogok mining area in Myanmar. It exhibits strong fluorescence under ultraviolet light, presenting a bright and intense red color with excellent clarity.
The current global record holder for ruby auction prices is a 25.59ct cushion cut Burmese “pigeon blood red” ruby – “Surinse Ruby”. In 2015, it was dropped at Sotheby’s Geneva for 28.25 million Swiss francs (approximately $30.4 million), with an average of $1.19 million per carat, which is also the highest single carat auction record for ruby.
