French jeweler Lydia Courteille has just launched a new fine jewelry collection, “Love Song,” inspired by famous historical and mythological love stories. The new work uses gemstone carving, golden carving, micro-painting and other techniques combined with soft colors of Morgan stone, pink sapphires and rubies to tell a moving romance.
“The Look of Love” was inspired by the popular 18th century love story “Lover’s Eyes” — King George IV of England fell in love with a common-law woman, Maria, and included a ring painted with his own eyes in his second proposal letter. After receiving it, Maria also commissioned an artist to paint her eyes on a brooch for the king. Since then, the eye portrait jewelry has become a token of love.
The “Jupiter and Ganymede” ring features an olive Morgan stone in the shape of 41.34ct. On one side of the ring, a white gold diamond is used to create an eagle image. Pink sapphire wings seem to hold the main stone in their arms. The ring was inspired by a gay love story in ancient Greek mythology. Zeus Jupiter fell in love with the Trojan prince Ganymede, so Zeus turned into an eagle and brought Ganymede back to Mount Olympus, where Ganymede became the sommelier of Zeus.
The earpendant works are based on the Morgan stone, and the main characters of the love story are carved on the main stone through the intaglio carving process. Tristan and Isolde earpendants are themed on the Celtic tragic love legend “Tristan and Isolde”. The Oprheus and Eurydice earrings tell about the love between Orpheus and Eurydice in ancient Greek mythology. Cleopatra and Antony tell the tale of Cleopatra and Marc and Antony falling in love but killing themselves in battle.
