Aquamarine, like emerald, is a gemstone made from the mineral beryl, so its chemical composition, crystal characteristics, and physical characteristics are basically the same. The difference is that due to the different causes and conditions for the formation of beryl, the chromogenic ions contained in it have a different color. Different colors have different types of gemstones, the most common being the following:
(3) Beryl contains chromogenic ions of cesium, lithium and manganese, its color is rose red, called cesium beryl (morganite), its English name comes from the name of the American gem lover (jpmorgan).
(4) Beryl contains iron and has a golden yellow and light lemon yellow color, which is called golden beryl (heliiedor), and its English name is not derived from the Greek “sun”.
(5) Beryl contains titanium and dark brown iron called dark brown beryl (dark brown beryl).
Much less valuable than emeralds, aquamarines have long been popular. Considered a sign of happiness and eternal youth, it is also believed that it gives the wearer insight and foresight, some believe that it has the power to destroy sleep, and that aquamarine is contained in a person, then he can escape from hell Exchange for the devil and get answers to any question , which he will want to ask, and also believes he has the power to suppress evil, allowing the wearer to defeat evil.
Distinguishing from similar gemstones is the key to identifying an aquamarine. There are many gemstones similar to aquamarine, such as color-changing topaz, apatite, color-changing zircon, glass and artificial spinel, etc. The main differences are shown in Table 6-2-1 below. It can be seen that they are very different from the physical characteristics of the imitations and are easy to identify.
Sapphire hardness 7.5 Density (g/cm3) Refractive index 2.67-2.90 Birefringence 1.560-1.600 0.006 Characteristic of four light and dark changes under polarizer
Zircon hardness 7.5 Density (g/cm3) 4.69 Refractive index 1.926-1.985 Birefringence 0.059 No features under the polarizer
Synthetic spinel Hardness 8.0 Density (g/cm3) 3.63 Refractive index 1.728 Birefringence No sign under polarizer
In addition, the color of aquamarine is sky blue, light blue, glassy luster, and there are few inclusions, but tubular inclusions can be seen, usually hollow or liquid-filled thin tubular inclusions with a cat’s eye effect.
The economic valuation of aquamarine is based on color, clarity, weight, etc. Generally, those with deep color, intrinsic flawlessness, and heavy weight are the best products and have higher value.
